Shoelala Boutique
Parametric design meets playful energy in a bold retail statement
A boutique store design for Shoelala — a retail concept that demanded a space as bold and joyful as the brand itself. The design centres on a dramatic parametric ceiling installation in vivid red that descends from above in sweeping CNC-cut fins, paired with a matching sculptural reception desk. The result is a space that stops people in the street and stays in memory long after.
What the Client Needed
- Create a retail space that immediately communicates the playful, bold identity of the Shoelala brand
- Design a ceiling installation that serves as the dominant architectural statement
- Develop a reception desk that complements the ceiling as a sculptural piece
- Choose a floor material that is cheerful, durable, and brand-appropriate
- Achieve a space that photographs spectacularly for social media and brand marketing
The Groundwork
Research into bold retail identity design confirmed that the most memorable spaces commit fully to a single design idea — there is no halfway with parametric design. The most successful examples use one expressive element (a wall, a ceiling, a floor) with everything else restrained so the focus is absolute.
The Idea
"Red Waves" — a retail interior that treats the ceiling as the stage and the floor as the canvas. The parametric red installation overhead sets the energy of the entire space; the terrazzo floor anchors it in something timeless and tactile.
What We Faced
- Fabricating a large-scale parametric ceiling installation within a boutique retail budget
- Balancing the visual intensity of the red installation with a comfortable retail atmosphere
- Integrating functional lighting within an expressive ceiling that dominates the space
How We Solved It
- Developed a modular panel system allowing the parametric geometry to be fabricated in sections and assembled on site
- Used cream walls and a light terrazzo floor to ensure the red reads as energising rather than overwhelming
- Concealed LED strip lighting within the ceiling structure so the installation is both the centrepiece and the light source
