A bedroom redesign for a school-age boy, balancing study, rest, and personal expression in equal measure. The space is built around the idea that a boy's room should feel genuinely his — not a generic children's room, but a space that reflects his character and gives him room to grow into across his teenage years.
What the Client Needed
- Design a study zone that encourages real academic focus
- Create a space that reflects the boy's personality and makes him proud of his room
- Provide generous, well-organized storage for books, equipment, and personal items
- Design for longevity — a space that remains relevant through the teenage years
The Groundwork
Research into adolescent environments shows that rooms which allow genuine personal expression and provide a sense of ownership consistently support better academic performance and emotional wellbeing. The room should feel like a chosen retreat, not an assigned space.
The Idea
"His Own World" — a bedroom that belongs completely to its occupant. Personal, functional, and designed to evolve alongside the person who lives in it.
What We Faced
- Designing a study area that genuinely gets used rather than avoided
- Balancing a strong individual aesthetic with the practical demands of a growing boy's daily life
How We Solved It
- Positioned the desk for natural side-light, with a dedicated shelf run above it to make the study zone feel purposeful and complete
- Selected a restrained palette with one strong accent that gives the room clear character without limiting future changes
